The Woodrow Wilson House is saddened by the death of Steve Carson, a Wilson House Museum Guide and historian who was a compiler of the J.R. Bolling Daybook – a timeline of the life of Woodrow Wilson on our website. Steve brought his love of history, especially presidential history to every tour that he gave at Wilson House. A gifted storyteller, Steve could hold museum visitors attention with his recounting of Wilson history – and also on occasion by his singing of popular World War I songs. Most recently Steve had compiled and documented the Wilson administration stand on race relations and issues of civil liberties during wartime for the Daybook.
Steven Lee Carson was an Abraham Lincoln scholar, lecturer, writer and editor. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at New York University, where he was the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship. He received his Masters degree from The Johns Hopkins University, where he was awarded the Charles Carroll Fulton Fellowship. In his professional life, he lived and worked in the Washington area, working at the National Archives, editing and writing for 15 years, the international quarterly, The Manuscript Society News and other notable positions. Steve was the Chairman of the White House Conference on Presidential Children and the past Chairman of the National Press Club Conference on Covering White House Families. He also was the past President of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia (LGDC). Steve was a member of the Board of Trustees of the United States Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, the Abraham Lincoln Institute, the Lincoln Forum and the Lincoln Group of Illinois.
Steve has also lectured on the eldest son of Abraham Lincoln, Robert Todd Lincoln and wrote a play on the life of Robert Todd Lincoln, which was presented at Ford's Theater. Mr. Carson also had a long passion in collecting manuscripts and autographs of Presidents and Lincoln memorabilia. Over the years, Mr. Carson also conducted tours of historical Washington, D.C. landmarks, from Lafayette Park to Arlington National Cemetery.
