J. R. Bolling's Daybook Now Complete for S Street Years 1921-1924
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
J.R. Bolling's Daybook, an interactive daily timeline of Woodrow Wilson’s life has now been completed for the S Street years (1921-1924). Begun as a Wilson 150 initiative in 2004 and funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, Museums for America Grant with additional support from the National Trust Interpretation and Education fund the work was initiated Dr. Mark Benbow. Dr. Benbow compiled and edited the initial entries from December 28, 1856 through Wilson’s death on February 4, 1924 using John Randolph Bolling’s compilation of key events in the life of Wilson published in 1927 as the “Chronology of Woodrow Wilson”. The “Chronology” noted the most important events in Wilson’s life, including the years before his presidency. Bolling also kept a detailed account of the visitors to the Wilsons on S Street and also noted Wilson’s daily activities such as his daily auto rides, trips to the theater the various public appearances made by the former President. A daily entry for the entire period for the S Street years have been added and edited on the interactive timeline. These entries were made by Steven Carson, a noted historian and Wilson House museum guide. Since the missing days did not appear in Bolling's original datebook or in his S Street desk calendar, Mr. Carson compiled them from various other sources including the Papers of Woodrow Wilson edited by Arthur S. Link.

Visit the Daybook above – and enjoy your exploration of a day in the life of Woodrow Wilson! ... read more

In Memory - RICHARD BOLLING FULLER
Monday, March 17, 2008
On February 12, 2008, we were saddened to learn of the death Richard Bolling Fuller, our close friend and Wilson House Advisory Board member. Over the years many came to know Richard, not only as Edith Bolling Wilson’s great-nephew but as a true friend and generous supporter of the museum. His stories and memories of “Aunt Edith” strengthened her role as “keeper of the flame” as we preserve this important historic site. Richard grew up in Washington and always helped us better understand the importance of “story” in history. Sadly with his passing goes yet another great story-teller and legacy keeper.

Richard was born on December 15, 1945 in Sanford, Florida. The son of the late Cary C. Fuller and Barbara Bolling Fuller, Richard was a graduate of Duke University. He served in the United States Air Force for four years in Cambodia and Viet Nam. After his military service he worked as a professional staff member for Congressman Bob Edgar of Pennsylvania and in recent years was National Legislative Director for the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

He is survived by his brother Cary Clark Fuller of Port Chester, New York and seven cousins, including Sterling R. Bolling, Jr., formerly of Washington and also a member of the Wilson House Advisory Board.

Services will be held on Monday, March 17, at Ft. Myer Chapel, at 3 p.m. and friends and colleagues are invited. Please assemble in the Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Fuller-Fowler Fund for Young Artists at the Washington Cathedral Choral Society, a fund that Richard and his brother Cary set up to honor their mother Barbara Fuller and their Aunt Clara Fowler, or the Richard Bolling Memorial Fund at Woodrow Wilson House to continue exhibition and audience outreach which Richard generously supported. Contributions to Woodrow Wilson House may be made by clicking here. ... read more

A special invitation from the FRIENDS of WILSON HOUSE and the Wilsonian Club to join us on an in-depth behind the scenes tour of the US CAPITOL, the primary architectural icon of Washington, DC. and the seat of American democracy. Guided by a member of the Capitol Historian’s staff we will stand in the center of the principal ceremonial space, the Rotunda, which serves as a gallery of paintings and sculpture depicting significant people and events in the nation's history. Passing along the warren of corridors we will see works of art that reflect the development of the United States and the Congress. They range from bronze and marble statues to oil portraits and frescoed murals. Their subjects include prominent Americans, important moments in history, and allegorical representations of the nation's ideals. Director's Corner
Friday, July 20, 2007
Let’s hear it for our curators! In Washington DC museum curatorship is a cottage industry. I can think of no other American city where it is not uncommon to count among your friends and acquaintances, a curator – or at least someone in the museum profession. Being a museum curator in Washington DC certainly comes with its rewards, not always registering in your base net worth, but certainly the opportunity to work with significant national treasures and build a network of world class contacts. I am not only talking about the folks who care for objects in the nation’s attic at the Smithsonian or priceless works of art at the National Gallery! The small art museums and specialty museums in Washington are equally world class and have equally qualified curators. The Phillips Collection, the Kreeger and the Textile Museum rank among the top cultural offerings in this Capital City. There is also an outrageous abundance of historic house museums in our area, from Mount Vernon to the Frederick Douglas House or the home of Red Cross founder, Clara Barton. In fact, the Historic House Consortium lists over 33 historic sites just in and around the beltway http://www.dchousemuseums.org. ... read more

Woodrow Wilson's 1923 Rolls Royce Returns
Wednesday, January 24, 2007
On December 28, 1923, Woodrow Wilson’s 67th birthday, the former President found an extraordinary present outside his house on S Street: a brand new Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Touring Car. The car was a gift from four of Wilson’s closest Princeton friends: Cleveland Dodge, Bernard Baruch, Jesse Jones and Tom Jones. Tucked away in a private collection for the past 35 years, this legendary automobile now returns to Washington as the centerpiece of WILSON 150, a celebration commemorating the 150th anniversary of Woodrow Wilson’s birth. Organized by the Woodrow Wilson House, the only presidential museum in Washington and a National Trust Historic Site, WILSON 150 presents a series of programs from June 3 through December 28, 2006.

WILSON HOUSE OUTREACH to young audiences …
Saturday, December 16, 2006
When asked about keeping his tours fresh, Wilson House Guide Dick Goodwin was quick to divulge his secret: “Each year the Congressional Youth Leadership Council brings approximately 900 sixth and seventh graders to the Woodrow Wilson House in Washington to share in the experience of being in the nation’s Capital and in working with other students to help develop their leadership skills. They come from every state and are selected for their performance in school and their interest in history.

The Wilson House hosts 300 each spring, fall and summer. A different group of 30 arrives each week with 2 adults. They are interested in the period 1900-1925. They view the DVD and take a tour of the house. During their 2 hours with us we discuss events of that period and what caused them, as well as Wilson’s leadership role. We also view the technology of the period and how it affected world events.

The students are bright, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They give as hope for the future.”

Dick Goodwin has dedicated many years to Wilson House visitors and to making every tour an educational and inspiring experience. ... read more

Wilson 150 Exhibition EXTENDED to November 12, 2006
Saturday, June 03, 2006
The Wilson 150 anniversary celebration kicks off with a new exhibition examining Wilson’s rich and complex legacy. On view from June 3 – November 12, 2006, Wilson 150: The Exhibition juxtaposes Wilson’s political achievements with his less familiar private life. Often perceived as a humorless schoolmaster, Wilson was in fact a passionate man who doted on his wife and three daughters. Wilson 150 chronicles both his public life in office as well as his private life at home through political memorabilia as well as other personal effects, such as his signature top hat, pince nez, and never-before-published photographic proofs. While the exhibition examines Wilson as a determined president, educator, world statesman and peacemaker, it also provides rare insight into his everyday pleasures and reveals a deeper understanding of his personal humanity ... read more
