A violent storm ripped through Washington, downing trees at the White House. A sudden violent storm swept through the capital city in the afternoon downing trees at the White House. Wilson was in the in his office when the storm hit and secret service men moved him to an inside room away from windows. First Lady Ellen Wilson and the Wilson’s three daughters were spending vacation in New Hampshire. Wilson wrote to his wife noting that he was fine, but that when the storm came through it was a “cyclone” and the sky was “black as night.”Two men were killed when the downtown building they were in collapsed in the wind. The storm also broke windows in the Bureau of Engraving building and scattered thousands of dollars in new bills across the Mall and into the reflecting pool and around the Washington Monument. Most of the money was recovered by Bureau employees.
